Lorentz Aether Theory: A Medium Theory That Was Never Experimentally Refuted

The claim that the aether was disproven by experiment is, in one important case, demonstrably false. Hendrik Antoon Lorentz developed between 1892 and 1909 a complete electromagnetic theory of a stationary aether which reproduces, for every experiment ever performed, predictions identical to those of Einstein's special theory of relativity. This is not a historical curiosity but a formal result: introducing length contraction and time dilation for all physical processes within a designated preferred frame yields the full Lorentz transformation and therefore the same observable consequences, a relationship made precise by the Robertson-Mansouri-Sexl test theory framework used to this day to quantify constraints on Lorentz invariance. Lorentz aether theory was not refuted. It was set aside on grounds of theoretical economy, because it posits an undetectable preferred frame that adds nothing to the theory's predictive content. This paper documents that history in detail: Lorentz's 1892 electron theory, its quantitative explanation of the Zeeman effect for which Lorentz and Zeeman shared the 1902 Nobel Prize, the introduction of local time and length contraction, the full transformation of 1904, and Poincare's correction of specific errors in Lorentz's treatment of charge density. The paper then identifies the argumentative consequence for this series. If a fully worked medium theory can be observationally indistinguishable from the theory that replaced it, then no experiment has excluded medium-based accounts as a class, and the burden on any such account is to demonstrate either equivalence or a specific point of divergence. The paper closes by locating Lorentz's immobile aether between the classical mechanical medium and Einstein's motion-free relativistic ether, and states what the Ether Plenum of this series inherits from that trajectory and what it does not.
