Successful pregnancy outcome following fertility-sparing treatment for cervical cancer: A case report on the challenges of assisted reproductive techniques
OBJECTIVE: This case report highlights the challenges of fertility preservation and the use of assisted reproductive techniques (ART) following fertility-sparing treatment for cervical cancer, with a focus on a successful pregnancy despite significant complications. CASE REPORT: A 37-year-old woman with stage IB cervical cancer underwent trachelectomy, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. Prior to treatment, she cryopreserved oocytes and embryos. Initial embryo transfer failed due to cervical deformities and a thin endometrium. Hormone replacement therapy and hysteroscopic correction of isthmal synechiae improved endometrial thickness, enabling successful embryo transfer. Two frozen embryos were implanted, resulting in a singleton pregnancy. At 29 weeks, a cesarean section was performed due to pre-eclampsia and chronic fetal distress, delivering a live infant. CONCLUSION: This case highlights the complexities of managing fertility in cervical cancer patients following fertility-sparing treatments. Despite significant challenges, including thin endometrium, isthmal synechiae, and heightened risks of preterm labor, successful pregnancy can be achieved through individualized ART protocols.
