Sacred Journeys and Local Growth: Assessing the Economic Catalyst and Cultural Shifts of Religious Tourism in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria

This study investigated the Economic and Cultural Implications of Religious Tourism on Local Communities in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, under the theme "Sacred Journeys and Local Growth." Religious tourism has emerged as a significant socio-economic force in Nigeria, yet its specific impact on the localized demographics of Akwa Ibom remains under-explored. The research aimed to evaluate how faith-based travel acts as an economic catalyst and to investigate the resulting shifts in social and cultural identities. Adopting a Multi-Stage Sampling Technique, the researcher surveyed a sample of 350 respondents across nine Local Government Areas, representing the state's three senatorial districts. Data was collected using structured questionnaires and 15 qualitative interview sessions at diverse religious landmarks, including modern mega-churches (e.g., Uma Ukpai Evangelical Church), traditional ancestral shrines (e.g., Akai Mbiam), and commercial spiritual hubs. Findings revealed that religious tourism is a potent driver of the local micro-economy, with 42% of respondents engaged as traders or business owners benefiting directly from the influx of tourists. The study identified high-capacity hubs, such as the Uma Ukpai Miracle Crusade, which recorded the highest economic impact scores (35/48). However, a critical infrastructural lag was noted, with road and electricity development failing to keep pace with tourism growth. Culturally, while 70% of respondents acknowledged increased global visibility for their communities, 44% expressed concerns regarding the erosion of traditional rituals and indigenous heritage. The study concludes that while religious tourism stimulates job creation and revenue, it necessitates a balanced policy approach to prevent cultural displacement. Recommendations include the implementation of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) for infrastructural maintenance, the promotion of Cultural-Religious Hybrid Tourism to preserve traditional festivals, and the establishment of a community-led "Pilgrim Levy" to fund local development projects.
