The Dutch Disease Trap

1. Objective This research evaluates the structural trade architecture of Kazakhstan to determine whether high dependence on primary commodity exports concentrates the national trade profile, constrains Economic Complexity Index (ECI) expansion, and triggers structural "Dutch Disease" pressures. 2. Methodology & Execution Trade Metrics Calculation: Extracted long-term global trade indicators from the World Bank API, computing the Herfindahl-Hirschman Market Concentration Index (HHI), Economic Complexity Metrics (ECI), and Revealed Comparative Advantage (RCA) across processing stages. Econometric Estimation: Estimated an Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) specification with Newey-West HAC robust standard errors to test the crowd-out effect of primary fuel dominance on high-technology manufacturing survival. Structural Decomposition: Analyzed post-2022 trade realignments to differentiate between genuine domestic industrial diversification and regional transit/re-export phenomena. 3. Key Findings & Impact Concentration Lock-in: Verified that export concentration remains structurally high across macroeconomic cycles, fluctuating inside a high-concentration band driven by global commodity price swings. Crowd-Out Effect: Empirically validated Dutch Disease mechanics by confirming that primary resource extraction channels exert a statistically significant crowd-out effect on domestic non-resource manufacturing. Re-export Anomaly: Exposed that recent increases in high-tech export shares reflect regional trade bloc re-routing (EAEU logistics) rather than an underlying expansion of domestic industrial capacity.
