French Rayonnant Gothic and the Emergence of Decorated Gothic in England

This article examines the reception of French Rayonnant architecture in thirteenth-century England and its role in the emergence of Decorated Gothic. Whereas earlier scholarship has often explained the relationship between French and English Gothic architecture through models of stylistic transmission and continental influence, this study argues that Rayonnant forms were selectively reinterpreted within architectural traditions rooted in Anglo-Norman and Early English practice. Rather than adopting French Gothic as a unified architectural system, English patrons and builders incorporated Rayonnant innovations into existing spatial, structural, and ornamental frameworks, producing distinctive architectural solutions that reflected local priorities and cultural conditions. Through comparative architectural analysis, the article examines Westminster Abbey (begun 1245), the Chapter House of Westminster (c. 1250s), and the north transept of Hereford Cathedral (c. 1250s). These buildings incorporated key Rayonnant features, including bar tracery, expansive glazing, and increasing ornamental sophistication, yet retained differentiated elevations, substantial structural frameworks, clerestory passages, and decorative practices rooted in earlier English traditions. Decorated Gothic consequently emerged not through direct imitation of French precedents but through the transformation of continental innovations within established English building traditions. More broadly, the article demonstrates that medieval architectural exchange operated as a process of reinterpretation in which patrons, craftsmen, and local traditions actively shaped the reception of imported forms.
