Strategic evaluation and development pathways of PFC Levski Youth Academy: A SWOT analysis

Youth football academies are central to sustaining professional clubs' long-term competitive capacity. This study presents a SWOT analysis of PFC Levski Youth Academy (Sofia, Bulgaria). An organizational assessment was conducted involving the academy's UEFA-licensed coaching staff, support personnel, and management. The academy demonstrates considerable strengths, including 22 full-time UEFA-licensed coaches, full age-group coverage from U6 to the reserve team, modern training infrastructure, GPS performance tracking, and consistent first-team integration — with academy-trained players accounting for 25.8% to 47.8% of total team playing time across five consecutive seasons (2019–2024). Key weaknesses include limited natural grass pitches, heavy reliance on membership fees, underdeveloped scouting networks, and the absence of on-site sports psychology support. External opportunities encompass satellite academy expansion, enhanced girls' football programming, integration of sports science technologies, and international youth tournament participation. Identified threats include economic instability, regulatory changes, and growing competition from private academies. Methodological limitations of the internal assessment design are discussed.
