Domesticating the Hero: Kinship Structures and Reciprocal Heroism in the Juunai Version of the Mongolian Epic Khankharangui

Abstract This article examines the relationship between kinship and heroic action in the “Örgöö örgöölsön” (Establishing the Hearth) chapter of the Juunai version of the Mongolian heroic epic Khankharangui. It argues that, in this performance text, heroism is not presented only as individual martial prowess but also as a relational form of authority constituted through parental counsel, fraternal assistance, matrimonial alliance, care, and succession. The study uses close reading of a 1990 manuscript transcription and maps the textual evidence along three axes: parental admonition, brotherhood, and alliance/lineage continuity. Its use of “reciprocal heroism” is deliberately interpretive and version-specific: The term identifies a pattern in which heroic action is authorized, sustained, repaired, and remembered through obligations to others. Lévi-Strauss’s discussion of kinship and reciprocity and Propp’s account of narrative functions are used as limited analytical tools rather than as universal explanatory models. The article does not claim to characterize all Oirat, Kalmyk, or Mongolian versions of Khankharangui; instead, it shows how the Juunai “Örgöö örgöölsön” episode links the domestic sphere to battle, healing, alliance, and generational continuation. By grounding its argument in identifiable passages from the Juunai text and by situating the manuscript within earlier Khankharangui scholarship, the article contributes to the study of Mongolian oral tradition, epic textuality, and kinship-centered narrative analysis.
