PORTFOLIO MANAGEMENT AND PROFITABILITY OF LISTED DEPOSIT MONEY BANKS IN NIGERIA

This study examines the effect of project management on profitability of listed deposit money banks in Nigeria. Net interest income, non-performing loan, and loan-to-deposit were used to quantify portfolio management, whereas the return on assets was used in place of profitability. Secondary data were obtained from the annual financial reports and accounts of 10 listed deposit money banks chosen by the study, ranging from 2016 to 2025. Descriptive statistics and regression were used to analyze the gathered data. It was found that net interest income and non-performing loan have significant effect on return on assets (p-values: 0.0011, 0.0000 < 0.05), while loan to deposit ratio has no significant effect on return on assets of the chosen listed deposit money banks in Nigeria (p-value: 0.2496 > 0.05). The study concludes that potential investors, as well as current investors of the selected banks can adequately rely on net interest income and non-performing loan in examining the return on asset of the chosen banks The study recommends that there is need for listed deposit money banks to enhance their credit risk control this will help in decreasing default levels as well as their non-performing loans. This will help to improve their profitability.
