From Academic Requirement to Professional Asset? Examining the Workplace Relevance and Utility of French Language Competence among UPSA Graduates

This study examined the workplace relevance and utility of French language competence among graduates of the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA). It investigated whether French acquired through university education functions primarily as an academic qualification or as a professional resource after graduation. A quantitative descriptive survey design was employed, using a structured questionnaire administered to 125 UPSA graduates. Data were analysed using frequencies, percentages, means and standard deviations. The findings revealed that graduates generally perceived French as a valuable professional competence, particularly for regional communication, workplace interaction and future career development. However, the results also showed a gap between recognising the professional value of French and having regular opportunities to apply it in workplace contexts. Graduates identified the need for more professionally oriented French training and stronger alignment between university language education and occupational demands. The study concludes that French represents a potential professional asset, but its workplace value depends on opportunities for practical application beyond university.

It investigated whether French acquired through university education functions primarily as an academic qualification or as a professional resource after graduation. A quantitative descriptive survey design was employed, using a structured questionnaire administered to 125 UPSA graduates.
