THE TWENTY-FOUR RULES OF FORTUNE AND MISFORTUNE: A Structural Doctrine of Karmic Causality in Sanatan Dharma

Fortune and misfortune are not accidents of circumstance, mood, or social condition. They are the two governing mechanisms through which Ishwar Vishnu administers the accumulated virtue and accumulated sin of every human being, and they operate according to twenty-four fixed rules. This paper systematically articulates the complete doctrinal architecture of fortune and misfortune, originally formulated and published by the author in Code — Core of Dharma Eternal (Ganapati, 2025, Motilal Publications) and subsequently elaborated in Kedi Purana. The present paper does not propose the Twenty-Four Rules as a new hypothesis; rather, it formalizes and organizes the previously published doctrine into a structured doctrinal framework. The paper establishes that fortune is the convenience produced by accumulated virtue and misfortune is the difficulty produced by accumulated sin; that these two forces distribute emotion, temperament, character, intelligence, freedom, prosperity, success, parentage, varna, ashrama, faith, birth, and death; and that the twenty-four rules governing this distribution are fixed, sequential, and independent of the human will. Each rule is stated first in a summary register and then explained in full in a dedicated exposition.The paper concludes that fortune and misfortune are not moral rewards and punishments in the popular sense but a precise administrative system operating on the mind, prior to and independent of individual preference.
