Study on cutting performance of textured cemented carbide tools under starved lubrication conditions

Purpose This paper aims to investigate the effects of circular dimple textures with different parameters of tools under starved lubrication conditions. Design/methodology/approach YG8 cemented carbide was selected as the tool material. First, the tribological properties of textured tools with different parameters were tested. Meanwhile, turning experiments were conducted to verify the cutting force, cutting temperature and surface roughness of workpieces processed by textured tools under starved lubrication conditions. Findings Friction tests showed that the texture with a surface density (Sp) of 10% exhibited a favorable friction coefficient ranging from 0.05 to 0.25 at different diameters. When the diameter (D) was 100 µm, the volume wear rate reached the minimum value of 0.1828 × 106mm³/(N·m). Turning experiments indicated that the textured tool with D = 50 µm and Sp = 10% achieved the lowest cutting force, which was 25%–30% lower than that of the non-textured tool. The surface roughness values of workpieces machined by textured tools with D = 100 µm and D = 150 µm were 1.48 µm and 1.35 µm, respectively, representing a reduction of 8.6% and 16.7% compared with those of non-textured tools. Overall, the tool with circular dimples of D = 100µm and Sp = 10% demonstrated the optimal cutting performance. Originality/value This paper explores the friction and wear behaviors of circular dimple-textured tools with varying surface densities and diameters under starved lubrication conditions and verifies the improvement of cutting performance by textured tools.
