Residual Gravity from the Time-Dependent Virial Theorem - P1
Gravity has memory. We solve the time-dependent Virial relation for the relaxation timescale: \(\tau_{\rm eff} = \sqrt{\frac{R}{g_{\rm obs} - g_{\rm bar}}}\) When measured across 277 galaxies, a clear pattern emerged: systems in equilibrium converged toward a common value near 36.6 Myr, while turbulent or disturbed systems consistently returned longer timescales. No well-sampled system fell below this threshold. Galaxy by galaxy, the gravitational residual revealed a linear slope: as τ increases, the effective gradient flattens — suggesting that what we interpret as dark halos are simply regions where spacetime remains curved by matter that has already moved onward. Matter and light probe the same geometry through different channels, yielding a fixed lensing factor 19/15 ≈ 1.267. All predictions were derived before examining the data. Perhaps dark matter is not a substance — but spacetime, with memory, gradually returning to its equilibrium configuration.
