Reexamining the self-sensing response of alkali-activated (geopolymer) materials

This review examines the self-sensing response of geopolymers subjected to mechanical loading. The analysis reveals that their electromechanical behavior depends strongly on raw materials, chemical composition, pore structure, and curing conditions. While geopolymers display sensing capabilities without conductive fillers, their inclusion can improve sensor linearity, hysteresis, and repeatability. However, variability in reported results indicates that key aspects of the sensing mechanisms remain unresolved, underscoring the need for further systematic investigation.

Abstract

This review examines the self-sensing response of geopolymers subjected to mechanical loading. The analysis reveals that their electromechanical behavior depends strongly on raw materials, chemical composition, pore structure, and curing conditions. While geopolymers display sensing capabilities without conductive fillers, their inclusion can improve sensor linearity, hysteresis, and repeatability. However, variability in reported results indicates that key aspects of the sensing mechanisms remain unresolved, underscoring the need for further systematic investigation.
