The IO PhD International Research Program 15 years later: where do we stand?

Abstract Background International doctoral research programs represent an effective model for fostering scientific collaboration and training clinician-scientists. The Italia-Olanda PhD International Research Program (IO PhD), established in 2010, was designed to promote translational research in neonatology and perinatal medicine through a structured international network. Methods A bibliometric analysis was conducted to evaluate the scientific output of the IO PhD between 2010 and 2024. Publications were identified through PubMed searches and manual screening of full-text articles based on acknowledgment statements referring to the program. Bibliometric indicators included publication output, journal characteristics, research topics, and citation metrics. Results A total of 85 peer-reviewed publications were identified over the study period. Scientific productivity increased during the first decade, followed by stabilization in recent years. A progressive shift toward higher-impact journals was observed, with a significant increase in Q1 publications over time as well as citation metrics (impact factor, h-index). The main research areas included neonatal biomarkers (34%), perinatal hypoxia (21%), respiratory disorders of prematurity (16%), nutrition (12%), infections (6%), and other topics (11%). Overall, the publications generated 1508 citations, with a mean of 18 citations per article and an h-index of 24. Conclusions Over a 15-year period, the IO PhD has produced a consistent and impactful body of scientific literature. The program represents a successful model of international doctoral training, supporting translational research and fostering the development of early-career clinician-scientists in neonatology and perinatal medicine.
