Impermeability Theory in Algebraic Systems

We introduce impermeability as an external structural property of subsets of algebraic systems. An impermeable subset is defined by the requirement that an element of its complement remains outside the subset when operated on, from either side, with an element of the subset. Unlike the usual internal conditions used to describe algebraic substructures, impermeability is formulated entirely in terms of the interaction between a subset and its complement. We develop the basic theory of impermeable subsets in arbitrary algebraic systems and investigate how the ambient algebraic structure affects the resulting theory. We establish, in particular, the stability of impermeability under arbitrary intersections and use this property to obtain a natural closure operator whose closed sets are precisely the impermeable subsets. We then examine the behavior of impermeability in semigroups and monoids, including restrictions involving identity elements and inverses. For groups, we prove that for every nonempty subset H of a group G, the following conditions are equivalent: H is a subgroup of G, H is impermeable, and G∖H is invariant under both left and right translations by elements of H. Thus, the theory provides an external characterization of subgroup structure through the behavior of the complement. Several consequences are developed from this viewpoint, including the barrier property of subgroups, the behavior of unions of impermeable subsets, an external factorization property for proper subgroups, and strengthened interaction properties for subgroups of index two. Finally, we discuss possible extensions of external factorization in arithmetic settings. In particular, the subgroup 2ℤ of (ℤ, +) provides a natural setting in which ordinary external factorization yields representations of even integers as sums of odd integers. Requiring the external factors to be prime leads to a prime-restricted external factorization problem related structurally to the Goldbach conjecture. This observation is presented as a direction for further investigation and not as a proof of the conjecture.
