The Dream-Mediated Awakening Hypothesis: A Testable Proposal on Dream-Like Consciousness, Physiological Threat, and the Transition from Sleep to Wakefulness

The Dream-Mediated Awakening Hypothesis (DMAH) is a conceptual and testable hypothesis concerning the transition from sleep to conscious wakefulness. DMAH proposes that every successful transition from sleep to conscious wakefulness may involve a transient state of subjective, internally generated experience immediately before or during awakening. This experience need not take the form of a conventional narrative dream; it may consist of imagery, thought, emotion, bodily sensation, fear, or minimal awareness, and it may subsequently be forgotten. The hypothesis originated from a personal observation involving rare awakenings accompanied by a sensation of severely impaired breathing and unusually frightening, sometimes nightmare-level dream experiences. This observation is presented as the origin of the hypothesis, not as scientific evidence for it. A more specific threat-intensity sub-hypothesis proposes that when a physiological disturbance creates a strong drive to awaken, the emotional intensity of the transitional dream-like experience may increase. One possibility explored in the manuscript is that fear-laden dream experience may accompany, facilitate, or participate in the transition toward wakefulness. An alternative explanation is that physiological arousal independently produces both awakening and frightening dream content. The manuscript presents testable predictions, possible experimental approaches, alternative explanations, and criteria for falsifying the hypothesis. No original experimental data are reported. Author: Metin Doğan Status: Conceptual hypothesis for scientific discussion; not peer reviewed.
