Regularity, Protocol, and Trace
The discussion began with an objection to the role of stability in the essay: if a mark requires a stable substrate, and if stability were recognisable only through previous marks, the framework would incur a regress. The problem led to a distinction between material robustness, which may exist in the real before any recognition, and the stability of a record, which arises through a process of inscription. The debate then turned to physical regularities and repetition. The protocol of recognition and the status of the trace formed the second core of the discussion. The sequence directly connects the essay’s thesis—existence as stability under constraints and measurement as the production of a mark—to the clarifications required during the debate, without attributing semantics to every physical regularity.
