Light-Triggered Nitric Oxide Releasing PVA/Ɣ-PGA Electrospun Wound Dressings
Antimicrobial blue light (aBL) (400-470 nm) and nitric oxide (NO) each exhibit exceptional antibacterial activity. However, aBL can be cytotoxic at bactericidal doses, while NO’s transient biological lifetime requires sustained release which can also damage host cells. This work attempts to create a combined system achieving photochemical NO release with high NO fluxes, enhancing antibacterial effects while reducing required NO donor concentrations and aBL energy densities. This approach is relevant for the treatment of chronic wounds where infection is a primary barrier to healing.
