Domain-Oriented Tooling for Model Context Protocols: Replacing Generic Query Interfaces with Declarative Abstractions
As Large Language Model (LLM) agents are increasingly integrated with enterprise data stores via the Model Context Protocol (MCP), a prevalent architectural anti-pattern has emerged: exposing generic database query interfaces (e.g., `execute_sql()` or `query_database()`). While versatile in experimental environments, this paradigm introduces operational friction, including high token consumption, non-deterministic query generation, business logic drift, and heightened security risks. This paper formalizes the Domain-Oriented Tooling Pattern, an architectural approach that abstracts relational databases behind a curated set of deterministic, domain-specific tools. We introduce MCP Blueprint, an open-source, configuration-driven framework that decouples tool metadata and SQL execution from application code. We discuss how domain-oriented tool abstractions lower the cognitive threshold required from the orchestrating model—enabling small, lightweight language models (SLMs) to serve the majority of enterprise data retrieval needs—while enforcing business logic determinism and reducing query execution risks.
