Application of the hierarchical nursing model based on Snyder’s hope theory in patients with advanced colorectal cancer undergoing chemotherapy

Patients with advanced colorectal cancer undergoing chemotherapy face significant physical and emotional challenges. Addressing their psychological needs is crucial for improving their quality of life. Snyder’s Hope Theory, focusing on the role of hope in coping, offers a framework for enhancing nursing care. This study investigates the use of a hierarchical nursing model based on this theory to improve patient coping strategies and hope levels. 200 patients with advanced colorectal cancer undergoing chemotherapy at our center from July 2022 to July 2023 were included and randomly divided into a control group ( n = 100) and an observation group ( n = 100). The control group received routine nursing intervention for advanced colorectal cancer chemotherapy and routine guidance before and after chemotherapy. The observation group implemented a hierarchical nursing model based on Snyder’s hope theory. The medical coping questionnaire (MCMQ) and Herth Hope Index (HHI) scores of patients in both groups before and after intervention were compared. Before the intervention, there was no statistically significant difference in MCMQ and HHI scores between the two groups ( P > 0.05). After 6 cycles of chemotherapy, the observation group had higher scores in the face dimension and lower scores in the surrender and avoidance dimensions compared to the control group, with statistically significant differences ( P < 0.05); the observation group had higher HHI scores than the control group, with statistically significant differences ( P < 0.05). The hierarchical nursing model based on Snyder’s hope theory can effectively improve the disease-coping strategies of patients with advanced colorectal cancer undergoing chemotherapy and increase their hope level, which is worthy of clinical promotion and application.
