COCOON: Rendering Physical Reality from First Principles
What if physical reality is not the fundamental layer of the universe, but the observable manifestation of a deeper informational process? This paper extends and refines the original work, COCOON: A Cosmological Consciousnness Ontology, by developing one of its three proposed formal foundations. This foundation explores how the physical universe may emerge through the continuous rendering of an underlying informational substrate. Rather than treating space, time, matter, energy, and even the laws governing their evolution as primitives, it examines how they may arise from the organization, resonance, and dynamics of fundamental informational structures. At the center of the framework is a simple but far-reaching proposition: information is fundamental, while the physical world is emergent. The paper develops the mathematical machinery needed to explore that proposition, including the informational structures responsible for rendering physical reality, the emergence of spacetime and relativistic behavior, quantum measurement and the Born Rule, mass, gravity, entropy, and the role of conscious observation. Consciousness enters the framework in a deliberately constrained way. It does not arbitrarily determine physical outcomes. Instead, conscious observation participates in informational resolution, through which Structural Information associated with unresolved possibilities acquires a semantic role and becomes part of the universe’s accumulating informational history, while Total Information remains conserved. The result is not presented as a completed theory of everything, but as the foundation of a broader research program. COCOON proposes a common informational basis from which quantum phenomena, relativistic spacetime, thermodynamics, and conscious experience may eventually be understood as different manifestations of the same underlying informational dynamics.
