The Predator Principle — The Cancer of Evolution

Evolution has cancer. Predation, generalised into the organising principle of a system, is malignant. That is a diagnosis, not an insult: cell division is not evil, but division that escapes its regulation, ignores every stop signal and consumes the body carrying it, kills itself by killing the host. Not the lion — the lion is not the culprit but the captive, bound to kill in order to live, with whole ecosystems balanced around that compulsion. The equilibrium that came out of the Cambrian is a balance of terror; calling it the balance of nature renames it without changing it. What we describe is that same pattern with the last bindings cut: extraction that keeps its gains, exports its costs, disables the correction, forces escalation and eats the ground it stands on. Nuclear arsenals are that pattern raised to the level of the species. The sixth mass extinction is that pattern running now. Neither is a test awaiting results. And cancer is treatable. Life did not begin by eating, and for most of its history it did not eat at all — it lived on chemistry and light. Its greatest leaps in complexity ran through cooperation and the containment of conflict at the level below: the complex cell is an archaeon and a bacterium that stopped devouring each other. Devouring is one late possibility among several, not the essence of life. A pattern that was adopted can be revised — and the same evolution that ran blind has now produced an agent able to recognise it and change it. Every factual statement in this corpus is traced to a named source. Every claim in the open register carries its boundary and the conditions that would falsify it, and each one can be taken further or contested through a public form. This release contains the essay corpus, the claim and source registers as machine-readable JSON, and the automation that keeps them in sync. The whole corpus is included here as a single print-ready PDF, alongside the site source.
