Brucellosis- A Persistent Zoonotic Threat In Animal And Human Health
Brucellosis is a bacterial zoonotic disease caused by Brucella species that affects both animals and humans. It is an important disease in veterinary microbiology because it causes reproductive problems in animals such as abortion, infertility, and low milk production. Cattle, sheep, goats, pigs, and dogs are commonly affected. The disease spreads through contact with infected animals, their secretions, or contaminated food products like unpasteurized milk. Humans can also become infected while handling sick animals. Brucellosis is diagnosed using laboratory tests such as serological and cultural methods. Control measures include vaccination, proper hygiene, regular testing, and removal of infected animals. The disease leads to serious economic losses in the livestock industry and is a major public health concern worldwide.
