The Trojan Tarpit Protocol: A Unified Defensive Framework for Bot Mitigation through Deceptive Acceptance, Resource Exhaustion, and Data Sabotage

Contemporary bot defense architectures are overwhelmingly reactive: they detect automated traffic and attempt to deny it access through walls of CAPTCHAs, IP bans, rate limits, and Web Application Firewall (WAF) rules. This paper proposes the Trojan Tarpit Protocol (TTP) — a unified, multi-phase offensive defense framework that inverts the conventional bot-mitigation paradigm. Rather than refusing service to detected bots, TTP deliberately accepts them, serves them a carefully engineered "gift" payload, and uses the bot's own ingestion pipeline against it. The framework synthesises five established but previously independent techniques — honeypot baiting, behavioral fingerprinting with cascade propagation, cryptographic proof-of-work taxation, deterministic data poisoning, and intentional response-delay tarpitting — into a single, coordinated protocol that operates entirely within the defender's own infrastructure. Abstract
