Values versus Tactics: The Liberal Democrat Predicament

Abstract The Liberal Democrats emerged from the 2024 election with their largest parliamentary party since 1923. The 2026 elections saw further progress in English local government and Scottish parliamentary elections, with support consolidating in areas of strength. But membership is falling and the leadership is being criticised for timidity in asserting liberal values. The party's fundamental problem remains that, to win under the current electoral system, it must attract support from voters who share few of its values. Meeting that challenge tends to obscure the party's values and causes internal tensions. After the 2026 elections, the party's leadership reacted to those concerns by, for example, promoting more clearly the party's European policy—for single market entry and then full EU membership. But the question is whether the leadership has reacted too late to eliminate a serious risk of losing seats if the Conservatives revive at the expense of Reform UK.
