The Centre–Delay–Consciousness (CDC) Model: Delay as the Protective Interval in the Formation of Truthful Experience

Depth psychology has established that a core self exists and that it requires protection. Winnicott named an "incommunicado element" at the centre of each person and identified intrusion, rather than injury, as its characteristic threat. Bion described the metabolisation of raw experience by an external container. Gendlin identified a pre-conceptual bodily knowing that precedes and generates language. What has not been named is the interval in which that protection actually operates. This paper proposes the Centre–Delay–Consciousness (CDC) model and identifies that interval as Delay. Centre is a continuous, pre-conceptual locus of truth. Delay is a protective temporal space that arises when a person lives from Centre, and which holds logic, demand and cultural noise at a distance long enough for raw experience to metabolise. Consciousness is the reflective layer that receives and expresses what returns. The sequence Absorb → Delay → Return describes how experience becomes coherent language rather than premature explanation. Three claims follow. First, that protection of the core is temporal rather than structural: an interval, not a defence. Second, that the primary intrusion is internal, a person's own logic, rather than external. Third, that the purpose of the protected core is return rather than concealment, which distinguishes the model from Winnicott's account of a permanently non-communicating self. The paper further proposes a relational sequencing scale (Minus–Zero–Plus) and a distinction between summit words and underwords, and reframes certain symptoms as signals of an unfed Centre rather than as disorder. The model is phenomenological in derivation and is offered for recognition and further testing rather than as a clinical instrument. The framework was developed through sustained self-observation and first published in literary form in The Centre (Yew, 2026).
