Tetracycline residues in broiler chicken gizzards and antibiotic use practices in peri-urban poultry farming in Dakar, Senegal: a cross-sectional study
Anonymized dataset associated with a cross-sectional study conducted between December 2019 and March 2020 in the peri-urban area of Dakar (Senegal), on the prevalence of tetracycline residues in broiler chicken gizzards and associated antibiotic use practices in poultry farming. Thirty poultry farms were sampled across 10 peri-urban localities (3 farms per locality), and 100 gizzards were screened for tetracycline residues using the CHARM II Test (semi-quantitative screening by radio-immunoassay competition, decision threshold calibrated on the European Union regulatory maximum residue limit for tetracyclines). The dataset comprises two files: farm_level_data.csv (n = 30 rows, one row per farm): farm identifier, locality, flock size, self-reported husbandry practices (regular health monitoring, awareness of and compliance with the antibiotic withdrawal period, staff training), antibiotic product used and reason for use, farm-level contamination status and contamination rate, and derived variables used in the regression models. sample_level_data.csv (n = 100 rows, one row per gizzard analyzed): disaggregated individual-sample version, with farm-of-origin identifier as a cluster variable, used for the cluster-robust sensitivity analysis reported in the associated manuscript. A full data dictionary describing every variable, the screening method, and the anonymization procedure is provided in the accompanying README file. Farms are identified by an anonymized code (EL1-EL30) with no link to the identity of the farm owners; no nominative data, contact information, or other information allowing direct identification of the surveyed individuals is included. This dataset is released under the CC0 1.0 Universal (Public Domain Dedication) license and is associated with the manuscript "Tetracycline residues in broiler chicken gizzards and antibiotic use practices in peri-urban poultry farming in Dakar, Senegal: a cross-sectional study," submitted to PLOS Global Public Health (DOI to be added upon acceptance).
