Be A Light
A philosophical poem about the mechanism of creation, in which darkness is figured as the current of time and light is figured as the countercurrent running against it.Darkness opens by claiming to be everything, everywhere, and all the time. Light is that same current flowing in the opposite direction, and claims the same. The poem’s central image is the treadmill of night: to navigate the dark is the friction that ignites the spark — to be a light is to run on the treadmill of the night. The friction between them is what creates matter and gravity. It also asserts that this friction is what keeps the soul tethered to the physical realm. To rise, to rest — that is the test. To oscillate deliberately between rest and exertion, to embody harmony — is to pass the test, while stasis and restlessness are the prisoners of the night. It is through this mechanism in which a soul ascends into destiny rather than succumbing to the sea of fate; a pure and tempered soul.
