Starlink in India: disrupting connectivity or daring gamble?

Research methodology This case was developed from secondary sources only. The secondary sources included industry reports (Statista.com, McKinsey report), company annual reports, news reports, social media sites and company websites. More than 100 sources, including technical documents, have been consulted. This case has been classroom tested with Master of Business Administration (MBA) students and final-year undergraduate students in a strategic management course. Case overview/synopsis Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet initiative, is expanding into India’s massive digital market of over 950 million users. While poised to bridge the rural–urban digital divide, the company faces severe challenges, particularly from a premium price architecture that is 10–14 times more expensive than entrenched local alternatives. To navigate strict domestic telecom regulations and accelerate market entry, Starlink strategically pivoted from an independent model to horizontal partnerships with telecom giants Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel. However, these same partners are actively developing their own rival satellite networks, threatening to lessen their reliance on SpaceX over time. Ultimately, Starlink’s expansion hinges on a critical strategic dilemma: balancing high cost of offering against a highly price-sensitive market, forcing the company to either significantly reduce expenses or target a specific niche willing to pay a premium for low-latency connectivity. Complexity academic level The case study, “Starlink’s Expansion into the Indian Market,” offers a rich and relevant learning experience for advanced undergraduate, MBA and executive MBA students. This case serves as a dynamic illustration of complex strategic decisions, particularly in the context of marketing, technology management, international business and strategy formulation.
