Data Management Plans for Linguistics Research : A hands-on introduction for international linguistics researchers
Linguistics researchers who work with fieldwork recordings, corpora, or community language data face a data management plan requirement long before they collect their first file, and this hands-on workshop walks participants through UBC's Simplified Pre-Funding DMP template using a running case study (a fictional field methods project recording Anishinaabemowin with Elders of Nigigoonsiminikaaning First Nation) to show what a strong answer looks like for each of the template's six questions: ethics and consent, describing your data, documentation for reuse, storage and access, protection, and long-term deposit. The session also covers CARE and OCAP® principles and four real examples from UBC's Borealis repository showing what community-controlled data governance looks like in practice, from fully open deposits negotiated with Elders to nation-managed collections that sit outside the university altogether. Participants leave with a working draft of their own plan, built during the session with support from a research data librarian, plus pointers to DMP Assistant and language-specific archives like ELAR and PARADISEC for when they're ready to take it further.
