Contralateral shade comparison in anterior teeth

Digital shade determination was used to evaluate shade distribution and contralateral shade matching in the maxillary anterior teeth of 120 patients aged 18–30 years. Teeth 13, 12, 11, 21, 22 and 23 were scanned with 3Shape TRIOS 4 Wireless and classified according to VITA 3D-Master and VITA Classical. Of 720 planned tooth-level observations, 709 were valid; 11 were excluded because of scanning artifacts. The most frequent 3D-Master shades were 1M2 (51.6%), 2M3 (24.7%) and 0M3 (6.6%). The most frequent Classical shades were A1 (45.4%), A2 (30.3%) and A3 (8.6%). Confirmed contralateral matching was higher with VITA 3D-Master than with VITA Classical, reaching 65.0% for teeth 11–21. Complete matching in all three pairs occurred in 26.7% and 5.8% of patients, respectively. These findings show that contralateral teeth can support esthetic planning, but individual digital shade assessment remains necessary for predictable anterior restorations. This supports cautious use of contralateral reference teeth clinically.
