Evaluation of the clinical efficacy of No-presan® TAB (drotaverine) in the symptomatic treatment of lower urinary tract diseases in dogs and cats

Objective. To evaluate the clinical efficacy and tolerability of the drug No‑prezan® TAB (drotaverine) in the primary symptomatic treatment of diseases of the lower urinary system (LUS) in dogs and cats (dysuria, pollakiuria, stranguria, hematuria, periuria, and urinary incontinence). Materials and Methods. The study included 18 dogs and cats presenting with symptoms of lower urinary tract disease (LUTD). The clinical evaluation of all animals comprised a physical examination, urinalysis, and ultrasonography of the urinary system. Abdominal radiography and urine culture with antimicrobial susceptibility testing were performed when clinically indicated. No-prezan® TAB (drotaverine) was administered at a dose of 1–1.5 mg/kg every 12 hours for a 3–5 day course as monotherapy. In cases of insufficient pain control, NSAIDs were additionally administered; antibiotic therapy was prescribed based on the results of bacteriological examination and clinical indications Results. Clinical improvement of varying degrees was observed in the majority of animals within 1–3 days of therapy. The most pronounced therapeutic effect was noted in cats with idiopathic cystitis and in some animals with bacterial urinary tract infections (UTI). In cases of urolithiasis, the response to treatment was less predictable; in some instances, additional analgesia or surgical intervention was required. In a cat with nephrolithiasis and subtotal ureteral obstruction, there was no clinical response to No-prezan® TAB (drotaverine) therapy. Conclusions. The obtained data suggest that No-prezan® TAB (drotaverine) can be considered a drug of choice for the primary symptomatic treatment of lower urinary tract diseases in dogs and cats. Further controlled studies with larger sample sizes are required to expand the evidence base for the drug's clinical efficacy.
