Using Games to Facilitate Conflict Management Skill Development in Resident Assistants: A Design-Based Study
This design-based research study explores how game-based learning can enhance conflict management skills in resident assistants (RAs). Using an adapted version of the social deduction game Werewolf, 12 RAs participated in two gameplay sessions followed by structured debriefing discussions. The study employed focus groups, observational field notes, and reflection protocols to examine how game mechanics facilitate the development of conflict management competencies. Findings reveal that games provide experiential learning opportunities that develop skills in conflict assessment, communication strategy, perspective-taking, and decision-making under uncertainty. The research demonstrates that intentional adaptation of game mechanics to mirror residential life contexts enhances learning transfer.
