Ultra‐Transparent Self‐Healing Large‐Area Hybrid Metal Halide Glass Scintillators for High‐Resolution X‐ray Imaging

ABSTRACT Hybrid metal halide glasses are attractive for next‐generation scintillators but typically suffer from limited size, poor stability, and unsustainable processing. Here, we report a large‐area Sb: ETP 2 MnCl 4 glass scintillator that combines high optical transparency (>92%), light yield of 19,301 photons·MeV − 1 , detection limit of 82.3 nGy air ·s − 1 , and spatial resolution of 30.1 lp·mm − 1 . Structural analyses reveal that Sb: ETP 2 MnCl 4 crystal can be melt‐quenched into amorphous glass while retaining organic cations and [MnCl 4 ] 2 − tetrahedra, thus preserving photophysical properties. Notably, Sb 3+ introduces strong ultraviolet absorption and dual radiative channels, where self‐trapped exciton emission and efficient Sb 3+ →Mn 2+ energy transfer synergistically enhance PLQY to 90.4%. Under X‐ray excitation, the glass exhibits stable Mn 2+ ‐dominated radioluminescence, outperforming Bi 4 Ge 3 O 12 . The 12.9‐inch glass screens enable micro‐scale static imaging and high‐speed angiography on a smartphone platform. Combined with low‐temperature reshaping and reversible crystal‐glass cycling, Sb: ETP 2 MnCl 4 emerges as a scalable, sustainable scintillator for eco‐friendly radiation detection and portable medical imaging.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Hybrid metal halide glasses are attractive for next‐generation scintillators but typically suffer from limited size, poor stability, and unsustainable processing. Here, we report a large‐area Sb: ETP 2 MnCl 4 glass scintillator that combines high optical transparency (>92%), light yield of 19,301 photons·MeV − 1 , detection limit of 82.3 nGy air ·s − 1 , and spatial resolution of 30.1 lp·mm − 1 . Structural analyses reveal that Sb: ETP 2 MnCl 4 crystal can be melt‐quenched into amorphous glass while retaining organic cations and [MnCl 4 ] 2 − tetrahedra, thus preserving photophysical properties. Notably, Sb 3+ introduces strong ultraviolet absorption and dual radiative channels, where self‐trapped exciton emission and efficient Sb 3+ →Mn 2+ energy transfer synergistically enhance PLQY to 90.4%. Under X‐ray excitation, the glass exhibits stable Mn 2+ ‐dominated radioluminescence, outperforming Bi 4 Ge 3 O 12 . The 12.9‐inch glass screens enable micro‐scale static imaging and high‐speed angiography on a smartphone platform. Combined with low‐temperature reshaping and reversible crystal‐glass cycling, Sb: ETP 2 MnCl 4 emerges as a scalable, sustainable scintillator for eco‐friendly radiation detection and portable medical imaging.
