Capturing the Intangible: Navigating the Epistemic and Structural Challenges of Art Education Archives in Museums

This paper presents the current status of art education archives within six Spanish museums. Although records and documents of art education programs exist in abundance, as this analysis will demonstrate, consolidating them into a unified archive remains more of an aspiration than an actual reality. This research faces the challenge of reviewing a field that is still in its early stages, not only in academia but also in museum and archival practices. The type of documentation produced by education departments acknowledges alternative ways of learning and collaborating that encompass multiple actors and notions of authorship. However, the way archives operate within museum structures – in terms of rhythm and classification systems – does not accommodate either the needs or the type of practices that art educators currently unfold. What archival categories and methodologies must be developed to formally acknowledge the processes and outcomes of contemporary art education practices? This analysis expands on the main challenges encountered by educators in documenting and conserving the outcomes and processes of their profession.
