Unraveling the trends and dimensions of risks and green bonds: a review and future research prospects

Purpose Considerable interest has been directed toward green bonds due to their significance in financing the shift toward sustainability. However, there are many factors and risks involved with these green bonds. Therefore, this study aims to comprehensively review the extant body of literature concerning the risk perspective connected with green bonds. Design/methodology/approach This study extensively evaluates existing research on the risk perspective of green bonds using bibliometric and content analysis methodologies. This study uses performance analysis to assess research trends and science mapping to uncover the underlying conceptual structure, followed by the content analysis of identified themes, offering insights for future research directions. Findings The study’s findings indicate that research on risk and green bonds has received notable academic attention since 2012. Prominent themes during the review include climate finance, climate change, climate policy, uncertainty, sustainable development and risk management. Originality/value This study strives to discern prevailing research themes, provide insights into current areas of researcher focus and propose potential directions for future research in the realm of risk perspectives associated with green bonds.
