Current situation of single-sex schooling in Peru: the singularity of the Peruvian case
This paper examines the current status of single-sex schooling in Peru. The authors argue that Peru presents a unique case regarding this type of school organisation as single-sex schooling has not faced significant resistance from policymakers or society in general. Despite a notable reduction in their numbers over the past decade, a substantial number of single-sex schools remain, including some that are relatively new, as well as many others in the public sector. The study also briefly reviews the history of debates and research on this topic within the country. Finally, it discusses how political and ideological debates surrounding gender issues, which have led to a backlash against single-sex schooling in other countries, have not significantly impacted the Peruvian context. Therefore, the authors propose that Peru offers a unique opportunity to conduct high-quality research in a bias-free environment.
