Creativity Heals: The Therapeutic Value of the Arts
The effectiveness and therapeutic value of creative expression though the arts, results in healing that reduces negative emotions and boosts mood (Stuckey 254). This review of literature covers creative art therapy methods that range from creative writing and reading poetry to the non-verbal expression of the visual arts that includes painting and photography. Included are the results of various studies that use traditional psychotherapies or talk therapy in hospitals, community wellness centers, and in private practices that have analyzed the effects of the creative arts on human emotions. Art therapies are used to treat and improve the emotions and moods of patients who suffer from mental illness and physical maladies that can cause depression and anxiety during an illness. The research includes non-traditional practices, such as meditation and yoga, which have enhanced healing when used together with traditional methods of art therapy. The developing field of art therapy is growing. The potential for healing negative emotions with the creative arts, in communities, such as group therapy, casts a larger net over the potential to heal more than an individual person seeking help. The outcome of group art therapies and community engagement with the arts, have impacted family and community members with positive results. It is conclusive that the creative arts as healing therapies benefit populations of people to enhance human emotions and overall health.
