Our Journeys Over the Rainbow: An Ethnography of Bisexuality and Biphobia Among College-Age Americans

In this ethnography, I explore the many faces of biphobia and the ways bisexual people respond to those experiences. Through participant-observation on a plethora of Facebook pages and interviews with several people, I have observed and recorded the many shapes and forms that biphobia can take. These Facebook pages include: Bisexual Solidarity, I Sure Wish Bi/Pan People Could Have Things, Sounds Biphobic But Okay, and I Am An Angery Bi And These Are My Angery Thighs. The I conducted with website participants and other social contacts, have allowed me to collect numerous stories about the pain many have endured and the impact that biphobia has bisexual people’s emotional, romantic and social lives. Through this ethnography, I hope for people to gain a larger understanding of the struggles that bisexuals go through nearly every day. I will also attempt to offer a preliminary answer to the question: After several decades of bi activism, why does biphobia persist, even among other LGBT people?
