Overcoming the Gender Inequity in Music Production: How Nonprofit Organizations are Giving Young Women a Foot in the Door
An exploration of the lack of women in professional roles as producers and engineers in the music industry, and the ways in which three different nonprofits are working towards bringing greater gender diversity in music production. Merely 5% of production roles are filled by women. This can generally be attributed to lack of value of women’s contributions, a lack of role models for young girls to aspire to, and a lack of access to the technology and education needed to begin a career. Gender Amplified, Women's Audio Mission, and SoundGirls.org are each taking steps towards solving these problems, thus bringing balance to who is creating the media we consume daily.
