Extra-Legal Governance & Street Gangs
Over the last two centuries, organized crime has been one of the most prominent forms of extra-legal governance, which exists to fulfill the roles that legal governance fails to. However, this is in reference to mobs and mafias of old, which calls into question as to whether or not modern day street gangs are capable of performing as a form of extra-legal governance. To understand the circumstances that enable the rise of organized crime, it is necessary to provide information as to the history of organized crime. Also, to understand if modern day street gangs execute their role, it is by extension necessary to determine if the rise in influence and membership of street gangs has any effect on violent crime.
