Accounts of Freezing and Thawing
Cryonics is the basis for my exhibition Accounts of Freezing and Thawing. In the early 20th century Soviet scientists engaged in the first experiments to preserve human bodies at sub zero temperatures. Late in 1962 Robert Ettinger theorized cryonics; a technology of immortality designed to preserve individuals for later resurrection. In the years following, several corporations were established to facilitate the freezing and storage of human beings. After death an individual’s body – or brain – is cooled and maintained in the hopes of future revival. My project is an exploration of these ideas along with my own encounters with mortality.
