Black Representation in Comic Books
Throughout this case study, I’ll discuss the issue of valid and appropriate representation of black people in comic books via black superheroes. I will reference the beginnings of black superheroes being seen in comic books to what it’s like now in the comic book industry. I’ll be questioning if the representation of black superheroes in comic books can be attributed to black comic book writers and black comic book artists. The two entities in the comic book industry that I’ll be analyzing are Marvel and DC. It can be argued that each of these entities have taken strategies from each other, mainly Marvel and DC because they’ve both been in competition with each other since the late 30s. Both companies have their early beginnings between the late 30s-early 40s, so they have had enough time to alter their content along with the ever-changing social climate in America.
