Deconstruction
Growing up I spent a great deal of time with my dad renovating houses and working on construction sites. I became interested in the concept of working with materials, such as oil paint, to build up a metaphoric wall which I then destroy. The idea of building walls and destroying them comforts me because it’s what I’ve known my entire childhood. While my paintings are very physical, they reference erosion and what isn’t quite there. They are airy yet concrete based on how I applied the paint and translucent colors. This allowed me to analyze concepts on negative space, figure-ground reversal, and materials.
