"Don't Call me Babe"Skater Femininity in New York City

Skateboarding continues to grow in popularity as a sport and a lifestyle for people all over the world, and while the activity is becoming less gender specific, skateboarding culture remains male-dominated. Over the course of a year, I visited three skateparks in New York City: Chelsea Skatepark, Cooper Skatepark and Coleman Skatepark (LES). During my visits, I observed and filmed five skater girls and their daily routines at the skatepark. I examined gender stereotypes as well as class structure by focusing on both the female skaters and male skaters at the parks and how they interacted with one another.
