Late Bus to Mecca and How Queer Bodies on Stage are an Act of Rebellion
Late Bus to Mecca written by Pearl Cleage is the full-length play I put up for my senior project. Late Bus is a story about two black women in the 70s trying to escape their current situations in search for a better life. It dealt with how these two black women navigate through the world right after the height of the civil rights movement and during the beginning of the women’s liberation movement. Performing in a play just centered on women and what they go through is so important to me. The two characters’, Ava and ABW, relationship is strong and real even though they meet for the first time at the beginning of the play. The idea of women sticking together and staying strong when the whole world seems to be against them is so beautiful and real. Late Bus deals with gender and sexuality in ways most people have not seen black women portray.
