The teachers’ movement and the repeal of the educational Reform in Mexico
This study focuses on the Coordinadora Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación en México (National Coordinator of Education Workers in Mexico, CNTE), which is the democratic current within the Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores de la Educación (National Educational Workers Union, SNTE). The analysis posits that the CNTE is a counter-hegemonic entity that has been seeking the democratization of the teacher’s union, education, and society, since 1979. This study explores why this group opposed the neoliberal educational reform and why it continues to resist the repeal of said reform as proposed by former president Andrés Manuel López Obrador (2018–2024). The study also examines the CNTE’s Alternative Education Proposal, its demands for ongoing dialogue to address pedagogical, union, and community issues, and why the López Obrador government came to pose an unprecedented challenge for this organization even though it apparently repealed the neoliberal educational reform.
