The Pure Whole and the Mixed Part Structural Parallels between Quantum Mechanics and Advaita Vedānta
This paper develops a set of explicitly graded structural parallels between the formalism of quantum mechanics and the conceptual architecture of Advaita Vedānta. The central physical fact employed is that a pure global quantum state can have mixed subsystems: reduced states, entanglement entropy, and emergent classicality are properties of a state relative to a specified partition, not intrinsic properties of the parts or of the whole. This partition-relative structure is compared as analogy, never identification with Advaita’s account of appearance: the describable totality (Īśvara/Saguṇa Brahman), the conditioning principle (Māyā/upādhi), the empirical individual (jīva), stable names-and-forms (nāma-rūpa, via einselection), and the shared empirical world (vyāvahārika, via the redundant records of quantum Darwinism). Two further comparisons are developed. The partition-relativity of entanglement entropy is offered as a formal analogue of the classical Bhāmatī–Vivaraṇa dispute over the locus of avidyā, and the unavailability of any local reconstruction of the global state from a reduced state is shown to select the epistemic (jñāna) reading of liberation over dynamical alternatives independently the position of Śaṅkara’s Advaita against achievement-models of mokṣa. Deliberate non-correspondences are stated with equal care: Nirguṇa Brahman, Ātman-as-witness, and consciousness receive no quantum counterpart, and the pāramārthika level is left unmapped. The resulting boundary structural correspondence with the saguṇa, empirical domain; principled silence on the nirguṇa is presented as the comparison’s most significant feature. The claim throughout is structural parallel only: the mapping neither validates Advaita Vedānta nor attributes modern physics to ancient texts.
