Cognitive Traps in Mental Health: De-biasing Techniques, Psychotherapeutic Approaches, and AI Interventions to Managing Heuristics and Emotional Reasoning

Abstract Contrary to the belief that humans are perfect reasoners, individuals often engage in reasoning that varies in rationality but is rarely entirely flawed. Effective reasoning is crucial for achieving personal goals, making judgments, and making informed decisions. This theoretical paper postulates that heuristics—generally functional for rapid decision-making, alongside biases and emotional reasoning—can become counterproductive in mental health contexts by reinforcing maladaptive beliefs. Emotional reasoning, in particular, can lead individuals to interpret reality based on how they feel rather than on objective evidence, further entrenching negative thought patterns. Research suggests that individuals with mental disorders are competent reasoners, often adhering to normative rules. However, the core issue lies in the maladaptive application of cognitive strategies and heuristics over which patients have limited control. De-biasing research indicates that correcting biases is feasible through training, though effectiveness varies. Psychotherapy is valuable for increasing awareness, controlling emotional arousal, and fostering acceptance of risk, helping patients align their goals with reality. AI technologies introduce new possibilities for real-time cognitive bias management and offer personalized interventions that could enhance traditional therapy. At the same time, modern technologies, particularly digital environments, risk amplifying cognitive traps such as the availability heuristic and confirmation bias. Future research should prioritize the development of AI-assisted methods to detect and adaptively respond to dysfunctional reasoning patterns in real time. Exploring how these tools can be integrated with neurocognitive and contextual data will be essential for designing scalable and individually tailored interventions.
