Rewriting the Left: Debating Nationalism, Imperialism, and the Politics of Transition in the Pages of Em Tempo

This article examines the alternative newspaper Em Tempo as a crucial platform for leftist debate during Brazil’s transition from military rule to democracy. It argues that the newspaper’s engagement with broad themes such as nationalism, imperialism, and democracy was shaped not only by the unfolding political moment but also by a deeper reckoning with the failures of earlier progressive movements. Through its political coverage and internal debates, Em Tempo functioned as both a forum for real-time political strategy and a site of historical reflection. This dual role reveals how Brazil’s redemocratization process was, for the left, not simply a break from dictatorship but a complex negotiation with the past—one that influenced the ideological trajectories and strategic choices of the post-authoritarian era.
